Youth Activism and solidarity in the Diaspora
Focusing on the global pandemic, our team have recently published an article about the Algerian diaspora’s impressive outpouring of collective solidarity in the UK, asking what motivates such forms of activism. The article looks at concepts of diaspora philanthropy, youth activism and citizenship. We wanted to understand, firstly, how diasporas might be enabled in supporting their communities and then the wider impacts of their crisis responses on processes of social change.
Training in Sustainability Leadership
As part of Youth Futures Algeria programme, Coventry and Jijel University, alongside Sustainability Leadership Kosovo, organised a training for Algerian postgraduate students in Algeria and the UK from the 9 – 12 September 2021.
Inspiration from the South: Oases as exemplary ecosystems
Climate change is increasingly visible and is already affecting regions in the south, regions that already experience the extremes of our climate. In regions such as Ghardaia or Laghouat in the south of Algeria summer temperatures can reach up to 50 degrees centigrade. How to manage agriculture, water resources and even community life then becomes a daily challenge. Oases cultures, however, have survived, adapted and thrived in harsh conditions for many millennia.
Can the arts help us Imagine the Future?
Faced with the challenges and uncertainties linked to the environmental and climate crises, the global pandemic and the ripple effects into our societies and economies, how do young people imagine their futures? How would they wish them to be? To actively create those futures, are they first able to imagine them creatively?
Jijel and Coventry Universities sign Memorandum of Understanding
